The City / Shield

The author, Jorge Rodríguez Nelli, presented his work under the motto "Peace, Union and Progress", and he expresses the following: "The shield is a symbol of fight for the progress. It was created in the Spanish style, according to the laws of the heraldic science, in memory of our mother country.

It has two fields, the upper one in azure emanel representing the truth, loyalty, justice, beauty. On the same field, the silver ¨Villarino Vessel¨. On the sinister canton, the South Cross, formed by 4 five-pointed silver stars in their natural position. Full gold embroidery and for the Crest a rising golden sun.

The lower silver field has the word "Rio Gallegos", name of the capital city, in azure on it. Its historic symbol is the Villarino Vessel, which in her maiden trip brought to our country the remains of Don José de San Martín from France.

Then it would also be the ship that would bring the materials for the construction of the First General Port Captaincy (which gave origin to Río Gallegos city) in its holds.

The "Villarino", which was commanded for several years by Don Federico Spuhr, was part of the first marine line from Patagonia. The City Hall of Río Gallegos, by Ordinance N° 1685 dated December 15th 1970, adopts this shield as the symbol of the City and the stamp of all the official communal documents.
